Modern Foreign Languages
Departmental Vision
The Modern Foreign Languages curriculum will create pupils who:
- Have a deep and rich knowledge of a modern foreign language to allow them to communicate in the wider world.
- Are confident well-rounded individuals who respect cultural differences and can value and recognise cultural diversity in our society.
- Experience awe and wonder in languages developing an understanding of how different countries express their cultural diversity.
Curriculum Design
The KS3 Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is based on the National Curriculum 3 pillars of phonics, grammar and vocabulary, developing linguistic knowledge of French from KS2 and focusing on the skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing. The course teaches the required grammar of the foreign language to enable students to manipulate and use language in context. At KS3, we embed language through work with sentence builders, scaffolding language learning through the EPI process of modelling and practising language before producing language with support and then autonomously.
At KS4, students follow the Edexcel French GSCE Language pathway, deepening their knowledge from KS3 and further developing their ability to manipulate language and use spontaneously in set contexts.
Core knowledge
Our KS3 assessments are based on core knowledge that we believe all students should know and remember. Students should therefore use the documents below to support their revision.
KS3 Core Knowledge - Sentence Builders
In French, sentence builders are used to learn core knowledge. These will be updated as the year progresses and will be practised and assessed regularly in lessons. The sentence builders below should be used as a resource to practise your French speaking at home.

KS4 Core knowledge
Below is a document displaying the knowledge that we believe all current Year 11 students should embed within their long term memory in order to be successful in French. This list should be used to prioritise your revision before moving onto deeper knowledge within the curriculum.
Extracurricular activities
Alongside our mainstream curriculum, we run a Spanish club after school with students who want to develop their conversational Spanish language.
Students are encouraged to use Duolingo to develop a love of languages.
