Sports Report 3 - 2019/20
GIRLS FOOTBALL
Only a few weeks in to the term and the girls football has already picked up momentum.
Wednesday 8 January 2020 the Year 7/8 girls team set off early to Huddersfield to compete in the EFL Northern Area Finals, representing Bury. This was going to be a day of high level football against some of the best teams in the North representing Barnsley, Bradford City, Huddersfield Town, Leeds United, Middlesborough, Oldham Athletic, Rochdale, Salford City and Sunderland. It was both a challenge and a new experience for the girls. Even with the cold conditions and fast paced games the girls gave a good account of themselves. They played 9 games in total, with a mix of results, winning, drawing and losing, leaving us finishing mid table. The girls should be immensely proud of their achievements, they played every game with the same determination, team spirit and sportsmanship, even though it was a long day they kept going to the end. Well done to the team of: Amelia M (C), Olivia M, Freya H, Josephine K, Matilda H, Eryn B, Lilly D and Maisie T.
Wednesday 22 January 2020 the Year 7/8 girls took part in the Bury Schools 5-a-side indoor competition at The Derby High School. We took two teams to allow all girls to take part. 10 teams in total took part with the Derby, Parrenthorn, St Monica's, Elton and Unsworth all fielding teams. Team 1 drew one game and won the other 3-0 (goals from Olivia & Amelia 2) which was enough to take them through to the semi-final as winners of their group. Team 2 drew one game, 1-1 and lost one 1-0 with Leah scoring the only goal, this resulted in a tie and needing a deciding game against Elton which Bury CE High School went on to win 2-0 (goals from Eryn and Leah). This put them through to the semi-final as runners-up in their group, which led to us having to play Team 1. A good competitive game ensued with Team 1 winning 2-0 with goals from Ella and Amelia. Team 1 then faced St Monica's in the final. An end to end battle resulted in a 0-0 draw and a penalty shoot out. Ella scored Bury CE High Schools only penalty, with 1 miss and 3 saves. Josephine in goal did a tremendous job saving 4 out of 5 St Monica's penalties and with the other one going wide Team 1 won the competition.
Team 1: Freya H, Olivia M, Amelia M, Lilly D, Ella G, Josephine K Team 2: Sam H, Eryn B, Ellie W, Emily B, Leah H, Matilda H, Mille W
Well done to all the girls, they have played some outstanding football this year. Keep up the good work.

The team then qualified for the 3rd and 4th place off competition against Turton for Division 1. This game was on Monday 27 January. It was a great achievement to qualify for this play off game from all the teams in Division 1.
Turton started the game fantastically well and scored a lot of early points. Bury CE High School kept working hard and managed to dominate the middle part of the game. Department for Education PE visit by Celia Kavanagh
On Tuesday 14 January, Celia Kavanagh from the Department for Education (DFE) visited the PE Department at Bury CE High School to discuss PE and school sport. Celia was really impressed with the range of extra-curricular activities on offer in school and the large number of students who take part in these. Celia was also really pleased with the PE and school sport on offer at our school. Celia offered advice and guidance to the department to help us further improve. Mr Connolly (Head of PE) and Celia then discussed the 'DFE School Sport and Activity Action Plan' that was introduced in July 2019. Well done to everyone who supports PE and school sport at Bury CE and this includes students, staff, parents, carers and governors. All your help and support is much appreciated. Many thanks to Celia for also taking the time to visit Bury CE.

Well done to our Sports Leaders from our Bury CE High School Sports Organising Committee.

Year 8 Boys Rugby vs Philips
Well done to the Year 8 Boys Rugby team who played some small sided games on Thursday 30 January at Philips. This was a chance for our students to play competitive Rugby Union against a local school. The focus of the games was fun and participation. The students from both school were coached during the games. All the students from Bury CE High School were excellent and the member of staff from Philips commented on how respectful our students were. Well done to everyone who played.
The two players of the matches were Nicholas J and James S. Bury CE High School will hopefully be entering a Greater Manchester Rugby Union Competition on Tuesday 11 February at Oldham RUFC. Rugby Union training will hopefully begin again after February half term and will be open to all students. More information about this will follow after February half term. If any students want to play competitive Rugby Union outside of school time for a local club then please see Mr Connolly. There are a number of local teams looking to recruit players at all age groups. Rugby Union is a fantastic sport that helps to develop physical, mental and social health along respect and resilience.Year 8 Greater Manchester Cup v Hazel Grove School
The Year 8 Boys Football team got to the quarter-finals of the Greater Manchester Cup. This competition is against the strongest teams in the Greater Manchester Area. The opponents were Hazel Grove from Stockport who last season got to the last eight of the English Schools Competition.
We started the game well and had chances to score but just could not score. Hazel Grove then raised their game and eventually won. Our students worked hard and it was a great learning experience for the team against really strong opposition. Player of the match was Theo A.Year 8 Greater Manchester Cup v Hazel Grove School
The Year 9 Boys Football team played Bury Grammar on Wednesday 29 January. Bury CE High School played really well and had a lot of chances to take the lead. At half time the game was 0-0 but Bury Church had been excellent and should have been in the lead. In the second half we played well again but Bury Grammar came back into the game. Towards the end of the game Harry M who had come back on as a sub scored and this proved to be the winning goal.
All the students from Bury CE High School played well but the player of the match was Matthew H who played left back and then central defender. The highlight at the end of the game though was when Mr Connolly unfortunately slipped on the grass at Bury Grammar and face planted into lots of mud. Mr Connolly ended up covered in mud and was unable to stop his fall as he had his hands in his pockets. This particular face plant in mud caused great amusement to the Year 9 Football team.
