GIRLS FOOTBALL

The girls have had an amazing couple of weeks of football with the Year 7/8 team taking part in the U13s EFL Cup on Wednesday 13 November and the Year 9s in the Bury Schools Competition on Thursday 14 November and a 5-a-side competition on Wednesday 20 November.

The Year 7/8 team played 3 teams in their group with the group winner going into a final against the winner of the other group.  The first match saw Olivia score the only goal in a 1-0 win.  Second game against Parrenthorn resulted in a 3-0 win with goals coming from Mille and Ella (2), one of which was a penalty.  Third game against Elton (Team 2) and a win would see us secure the group.  The girls didn’t disappoint and goals from Eryn and Olivia saw us win 2-0.  The winner of the other group was Elton (Team 1).  The girls entered in to the final full of confidence and determined to keep their unbeaten record.  The game was end to end for a while.  Bury CE High School then started to take control and Ella secured the 1-0 win with a fabulous goal.  The team: Josephine, Maisie, Eryn, Ella, Emily from Year 7 and Olivia, Amelia, Ellie, Millie, Freya, Leah and Matilda from Year 8.  Bury CE High School will now go on to take a team to the Area Final in Huddersfield where they will play other teams from the North West who won their early round.

The Year 9 team of Gracie, Olivia, Issy, Kate, Ally, Emily and Malorie ventured to a very cold and windy Woodhey High School for their competition.  Warm up was key and necessary on this occasion although it was difficult to remain warm!  The girls played against Elton, Bury Grammar School, Derby High School, Hazelwood Academy, Woodhey and St Monica’s resulting in two wins and 4 0-0 draws.  The wind caused us a few problems when trying to hit the target in a short space of time.  The girls played some exceptional football in parts and gave a good account of themselves.  Overall the girls finished in 3rd position.

It has to be said that the girls football over these two days has been very impressive; to play 10 games, with no loses and not a goal conceded demonstrates how well the girls have been playing.

Wednesday 20 November saw the Year 9 team of Gracie, Olivia, Leila, Issy, Kate, Ally and Emily head up to Unsworth Academy for an indoor 5-a-side competition against the hosts and The Derby High School.  An unfamiliar format of football for the girls, but nevertheless they love the challenge and quickly adapted to the pace and surroundings.  The first game was a very tight affair between Bury CE High School and Unsworth resulting in a 3-2 loss with goals coming from Issy and Gracie.  The next game was between Bury CE High School and the Derby, the girls did exceptionally well winning 3-1 with goals from Issy, Leila and Gracie.  The last game was between Unsworth and the Derby with Unsworth needing a win to secure victory.  It wasn’t to be as a determined Derby ran out 4-2 winners.  This left the competition as a draw, it went to goal difference and it was still a draw.  After consultation with all the players it was voted to have a penalty shoot out to decide an overall winner.  The tension began to rise along with the laughs between the teams as the shoot out started.  All teams took their 5 penalties and could you believe it, Unsworth and Bury CE High School still remained a draw with 1 goal each.  It was agreed that’s where it would end.

Congratulations to Olivia who was voted the overall girl of the competition for her exceptional goalkeeping during the penalty shoot out, saving all 5 of Derby’s penalties and scoring the only Bury CE penalty.

It was an excellent competition, a lot of the girls know each other and even those who didn’t soon started cheering and encouraging each other as they played  The competitive edge wasn’t taken away, it was always there, but made better by the camaraderie and jovial spirit.  The girls attitude and team spirit is outstanding and they are a pleasure to be with.
