Using the site will enable you to learn about our wide-ranging and diverse curriculum, about the departments, and life at Bury CE High School. News and Notices

BBC Philharmonic Orchestra visit

bbc_philv2

On Thursday 5th May, form 7ES visited the Philharmonic Studio in MediaCity to watch the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra perform their ’10 Pieces’ programme.

Our pupils learned about how classical composers created some of their most famous works.

A very enjoyable day out was had by staff and students who were treated to some thrilling performances.

Multimedia Journalism Day

media day
On 20th April a group of Year 9 students took part in a Multimedia Journalism Day at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).

The activities and workshops they took part in were led by experienced professionals in the field of Journalism and included a tour of the Journalism Department, including the Multimedia Studio ‘The Shed’. There were opportunities for our students to work on their own news story and investigate issues surrounding ethics and planning in journalism.

Visit to Moldova

moldova2
Our headteacher, the Rev’d C. Watson and Rachel Kell our PHSCE Learning Assistant recently visited Moldova to investigate ways in which we can enhance our curriculum in the area of human rights and dignity.  They found it interesting to see how education works in the poorest country in Europe and have brought back ideas which will support both our curriculum aims and those who live and work in Moldova. Working with the charity ‘Beginning of Life,’ they built friendships with some fantastic people who are working with Moldovans from all walks of life to see healing, restoration and reintegration into their communities after traumatic events. We look forward to developing this partnership in the future.

Careers Fair success

careers_eve2

We held our very first Careers Fair in School on 23rd March 2016 when nearly 40 employers, colleges, apprenticeship providers, training providers and universities were in attendance.

Parents and pupils in Year 9, 10 and 11 were able to come along and gather a wealth of information and advice about potential future careers and pathways. Feedback from exhibitors, pupils and parents about the event was extremely positive and we look to build on the success of this event next year and develop it further still.

TRIAL EXAMINATIONS

Trial examinations in a limited range of subjects will take place beginning on Monday April 11th. A full timetable has now been published and can be found here.

Parents of all pupils in Year 9 – 11 are invited to accompany their child to our Careers Fair which is taking place in school on Wednesday 23rd of March. The event has been organised in partnership with Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Bury Council. It will run from 5.30pm – 8.30pm. The fair will help to inspire, enthuse and motivate pupils to think about possible careers, the employment and Apprenticeship options available to them, and to make the most of their remaining time in education. We hope to see you there!

Additional Engaging Parents Evening on 27th January.

We have been developing a new assessment system for pupils in the light of the new GCSE arrangements in England. We thought after the publication of the first set of grades and before the next ones arrive, it would be good to offer parents an opportunity to have the system explained, especially as a few parents have reported to us that they have questions about it. Therefore, there will be an extra Engaging Parents Evening on Wednesday January 27th at 7.30pm to tell interested parents about the way our school grades work. The evening is primarily directed at parents of Year 9 pupils but if other parents would like to attend, they are very welcome. The meeting will last for about an hour, and will take place in the school hall.

If you are interested but cannot attend, you can access an explanatory powerpoint presentation here.

BCEHS Friends

The meeting scheduled for Monday 11th January has been cancelled. The next meeting will now be on Monday 8th February at 7pm in the school.

BCEHS Friends trip to York

The Friends have arranged a coach to York for a shopping trip this Saturday, 5th December. There are still a few places left on the coach, at a cost of £9 per adult and £6 per child. Please contact Mr Jackson at school for further information.
For those who have booked, the details are as follows: The school car park will be available to those travelling to leave cars for the day – it will be unlocked between 7:50 and 8:00 a.m. to park there in the morning and, obviously, be unlocked for a short time when we arrive back. We will set off at 8:00 a.m. Please do be prompt so that we can leave on time. We will meet at the coach in York at a prearranged time just before 5:00p.m. and hopefully be back in Bury, fair wind and M62 permitting, before 7:00p.m. A telephone number will be distributed to participants in York so that you can contact the rest of the party during the day should there be a problem.

Year 7 Mathematics Evening

maths eng parents 22 maths eng parents 11

Staff from our maths department held an evening for parents of year 7 pupils when they explained how the new maths works in school and how students could be supported at home. There were puzzles and tests and confusion and competition – some very intense competition as it turns out! Our thanks to the staff who planned and delivered the evening and the parents and pupils who turned out for it and contributed so eagerly to it.
